When Jesus Calls

Luke 5:1 -11 & John 21:1 -14

When Jesus Calls

There is a process that the Lord qualifies us with.
It can be clearly seen in Luke 5:1-11

They were simple men , fisherman , husband's, sons , father's.

They were not full of "theory" , "education" , "conspiracy" , "critical thinking".

The crowd was pressing in on Jesus because of his preceding miracles & ministries at the synagogues.

At this point he had no disciples but Jesus demonstrated his qualification of them.

Luke 5:1 ESV — On one occasion, while the crowd was pressing in on him to hear the word of God, he was standing by the lake of Gennesaret,

Luke 5:2 ESV — and he saw two boats by the lake, but the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets.

Jesus asked Simon Peter to push the boat out from the land so he could minister to the crowds.

Luke 5:3 ESV — Getting into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, he asked him to put out a little from the land. And he sat down and taught the people from the boat.

Jesus then asked Simon Peter for a step of faith.

Luke 5:4 ESV — And when he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.”

Simon-Peter replied with doubt & belief , but showed that no matter what he would follow the Word of Jesus Christ.

Luke 5:5 ESV — And Simon answered, “Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets.”

The belief in Jesus produced fruit.

Luke 5:6 ESV — And when they had done this, they enclosed a large number of fish, and their nets were breaking.

Luke 5:7 ESV — They signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink.

Simon Peter realised even with that little seed of doubt he was unworthy of the Grace & Mercy of Jesus Christ.

Luke 5:8 ESV — But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.”

Jesus saw the heart & intent of Simon-Peter & found him & his partners worthy to follow.

Luke 5:9 ESV — For he and all who were with him were astonished at the catch of fish that they had taken,

Luke 5:10 ESV — and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.”

The Process for being a disciple of Christ has not changed:

Hearing the call
Stepping out in Faith
The Belief that produces fruit
Repentance of the Sin & doubt

Because:
Romans 3:10 ESV — as it is written: “None is righteous, no, not one;

When Jesus Calls - The Catch - Part 2

In Luke 5:1 , Jesus spoke the Word of God at Lake Gennesaret, pushed out in a boat to speak to many people.

What is noticeable is this:

Luke 5:4 KJV — Now when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon, Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught.

"Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught."

The deep.

Now compare it with the following as Jesus appears to his disciples after his resurrection.

In John 21:1 , Jesus appeared at the Sea of Galilee after his Resurrection.

John 21:1 KJV — After these things Jesus shewed himself again to the disciples at the sea of Tiberias; and on this wise shewed he himself.

John 21:5 KJV — Then Jesus saith unto them, Children, have ye any meat? They answered him, No.

John 21:6 KJV — And he said unto them, Cast the net on the right side of the ship, and ye shall find. They cast therefore, and now they were not able to draw it for the multitude of fishes.

"Cast the net on the right side of the ship, & ye shall find"

Special note on the Right Hand side.

Stephen saw Jesus standing on the Right hand of God when he was being stoned to death.
Acts 7:56 KJV — And said, Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God.

Think about this:

"Casting the net on the right side of the ship"
John 21: 6

as opposed to

"Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a catch."
Luke 5:4

“Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.”

By faith venture into the unknown according to the Lord, & sharing the Word of God you will succeed.

Casting the net on the right side of the ship & you shall have meat.

Continually use the Word in accordance with Jesus commandments you will be sustained

Jesus responded:

John 21:10 KJV — Jesus saith unto them, Bring of the fish which ye have now caught.

This is related to:

Luke 5:10 “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.”

What do you think this means ?

A disciple has obligations.
